Frequently Asked Questions

A collection of common questions from MSc Geomatics students. Can’t find your answer here? Ask on Discord or contact us at geomatics@tudelft.nl.

Before you start

Do I need to know how to code before starting?

You don’t need to be a programmer, but GEO1000 (Programming) moves fast and assumes you can pick things up quickly. If you’ve never written a line of code before, do a short Python intro over the summer — Python for Everybody or the official Python tutorial are both fine. Students who arrive with zero experience tend to find Q1 stressful.

How much math do I actually need?

Calculus and linear algebra come up repeatedly (DTM, 3D vision, machine learning). You don’t need to be a mathematician, but if words like eigenvalue or partial derivative make you sweat, work through the TU Delft MOOCs before semester starts:

They are free and genuinely useful.

Programme & Courses

Where can I find the official study guide?

The current study guide is available at studyguide2526.tudelft.nl. It lists all mandatory courses, electives, and graduation requirements.

Where do I find course materials and assignments?

Most courses use Brightspace for materials, assignments, and announcements. Some courses (e.g. GEO1015, GEO1016, GEO1004) have their own dedicated pages — check the links on the home page.

How do I register for exams?

You must register for exams yourself through the student portal. Full instructions are on the TU Delft exam registration page. Missing the registration deadline means you cannot sit the exam.

Where can I find my timetable?

Use MyTimetable to view your personal schedule. You can subscribe to it via your calendar app.

Electives

How do I choose and register for an elective?

See the dedicated Electives page for the full procedure. In short:

  • Pre-approved electives — listed in the study guide, automatically added to OSIRIS once you pass.
  • Non-pre-approved courses — you must request approval before the course starts by emailing geomatics@tudelft.nl.
When is the deadline to register for electives?

For BK Faculty electives: end of May for Q1/Q2 courses, and early December for Q3/Q4 courses. Register through BIS. Deadlines at other faculties may differ.

Tools & Resources

Is there a student community or chat?

Yes! Join the MSc Geomatics Discord to connect with fellow students and ask questions.

How do I find housing?

Start as early as possible — ideally the moment you receive your admission letter, which is often months before you arrive. The market is very competitive.

  • DUWO is the main student housing provider in Delft. Register immediately, as waiting lists can be long.

Administration & Forms

Who are the Board of Studies and Board of Examiners?
  • Board of Studies (BoS) — chaired by Martijn Meijers: handles curriculum and course matters. More info.
  • Board of Examiners (BoE) — chaired by Hendrik Ploeger: handles exemptions, special cases, and approving non-standard electives. More info. Contact: Examencommissie-BK@tudelft.nl.
Who do I contact for academic advice or if I'm struggling?

Reach out to the Academic Counsellors at the faculty — they are there to help with personal circumstances, study delays, and more.

Where can I find the Student Charter and faculty regulations?

Which thesis course should I follow?
  • GEO2021 — for students starting their thesis in 2025 or later.

Where can I find thesis templates and writing tips?

Templates and writing guidance are available on the Geogeeks writing page.
